General photo questions
What photos do I need to sell a car?
Take 20–40 well-lit photos covering: front, rear, both side profiles, front 3/4, rear 3/4, full interior (dash, seats, console, infotainment), the odometer, the engine bay, the trunk, all four tires, and close-ups of any scratches, dents, chips, or wear.
How many photos do I need to sell a car?
20–40 photos is the universal answer. Below 12 looks incomplete; above 50 has diminishing returns except on Bring a Trailer (80–150) and high-end Cars & Bids auctions (40–70).
What is the best first photo for a car listing?
A front three-quarter angle — stand off the front passenger corner at chest height, wheels straight. It shows the front, one side, the wheels, and the stance in one image.
What is the best time of day to take car photos?
Early morning or late afternoon (golden hour) gives the most flattering light. Overcast days are also excellent because shadows are soft. Avoid noon sun.
What is the universal car photo checklist?
Front, rear, both side profiles, both 3/4 angles, full interior (dash, seats, console, screens), odometer, engine bay, trunk, all four tires, every visible flaw close-up.
Platform-specific
How many photos for a Cars & Bids submission?
Most approved Cars & Bids listings include 40–70 photos covering every standard exterior angle, full interior, engine bay, trunk, odometer, all four wheels, and clear close-ups of any flaws.
How many photos for Bring a Trailer?
Most accepted BaT listings include 80–150 photos plus a 60–90 second walkaround video. BaT bidders are detail-oriented and expect deep documentation.
How many photos for Facebook Marketplace?
15–25 photos is the sweet spot. The first 5–10 are what most buyers see. Lead with a front 3/4 hero shot.
How many photos for eBay Motors?
eBay Motors standard listings allow up to 24 photos; Premium subscriptions allow more. Use the maximum — completeness is a top predictor of bid activity.
How many photos for Craigslist?
Craigslist allows 24 photos and aggressively compresses them. Upload at 1600–2400 px for cleaner downscaling. Use all 24 slots.
Does Carvana require photos for the initial offer?
No. Carvana generates the offer from VIN, mileage, and condition questionnaire. Photos are requested only at pickup. Take 20–30 self-documentation photos for offer protection.
Does CarMax require photos to sell my car?
In-person appraisal requires zero photos. The online instant offer asks for 8–12 photos covering exterior, interior, odometer, VIN, and damage.
How many photos for an AutoTrader listing?
AutoTrader free private-seller listings allow up to 30 photos; Premium plans go up to 50. Use the full allowance.
How many photos for an OfferUp car listing?
OfferUp allows 12 photos per car listing — the tightest budget of any major platform. Use all 12 and lead with a strong front 3/4 hero.
Process & how-to
What is the best order to photograph a car in?
Exterior first (6–8 shots starting with front 3/4), then interior (5–7 starting with dashboard), then proof shots (odometer, engine, trunk, all four tires), then condition close-ups.
How do I photograph the odometer?
Turn the car on so the cluster lights up. Stand outside the driver door, frame just the cluster, focus on the digits so the mileage is unmistakably readable.
How do I photograph the engine bay?
Open the hood fully and prop it on the support. Stand directly in front of the bumper at chest height. Capture the whole engine bay in frame with no shadow over the engine.
Should I photograph my car indoors or outdoors?
Outdoors in soft daylight, almost always. Indoor garage shots have mixed lighting, reflections from overhead bulbs, and limited backgrounds.
How do I photograph car damage for a listing?
Frame the damage with a wider context shot showing where on the car it is, then a close-up showing the damage detail. Don’t hide it — transparency builds trust.
Equipment & camera
Do I need a DSLR for car listing photos?
No. A modern iPhone or Pixel (within ~3 years) is more than enough. Lighting, level framing, and consistent angle order matter far more than camera body.
What iPhone camera settings should I use?
Default settings. Tap to focus on the car body, lower exposure slightly if the sky is blown out, keep HDR on. Skip Portrait mode.
Do I need a tripod?
Not required, but helps for consistency — same height, same distance, same level across all shots. A $20 phone tripod is enough.
Should I use flash for car photos?
Never use direct flash on exteriors — it creates harsh reflections on paint and chrome. Use ambient daylight.

Dealer & fleet

How many cars can one porter photograph per day?
With the standardized template, 8–12 cars per 8-hour shift including prep. Without a template, 4–6 due to retakes and missed angles.

Insurance, lease & legal
What photos for a car insurance claim?
15–25 timestamped photos covering the scene (if applicable), every damaged panel from 3 distances, a 360° walkaround, dashboard with warning lights, odometer, VIN, and the other vehicle if a collision.
How do I dispute lease wear-and-tear charges?
Take a complete 25–30 photo set within 7 days of your inspection. Export a timestamped PDF. After the bill arrives, compare line-by-line and submit a written dispute for any charge not visible in your photos.
Are car listing photos legally binding?
Photos are part of your representation of the car. In most jurisdictions, knowingly hiding damage from a listing can be grounds for a misrepresentation claim. Honest photo coverage protects you.
Do I need to photograph my VIN when selling a car?
Not legally required for listing photos, but recommended. Some buyers ask for the VIN to run a Carfax/AutoCheck. Photograph the windshield VIN plate, partially obscured if you prefer privacy.
Privacy & safety
Should I blur the license plate in my car listing photos?
Optional but recommended on Craigslist, OfferUp, and Facebook Marketplace. Plates are publicly searchable in some states; blurring reduces unwanted identity-mining contact.
Should I show the VIN in my listing?
Partial VIN through the windshield is acceptable — buyers can verify on inspection. Full VIN is fine if you’re comfortable; it doesn’t enable identity theft on its own, but can be paired with other data.
How do I safely meet buyers for a car sale?
Meet at a public location (police-station parking lots are ideal in many cities). Verify driver’s license before allowing a test drive. Bring a friend. Accept only cash, cashier’s check (verified with issuing bank), or verified bank wire.
